Typhoon Fung-Wong in the Western Pacific Ocean is now heading for Taiwan. The cyclone is about 200 km short of the southernmost coast of Taiwan. The storm is on a recurving track and is likely to make landfall anytime in the evening today. Taiwan has evacuated over 3,000 people from the vulnerable areas. Schools have been shut and offices ordered closed.

The super typhoon had earlier ravaged northern Philippines on Nov 10, 2025. It battered the country’s main island, Luzon, with fierce winds, torrential rains, and storm swells. The super typhoon made landfall in the eastern town of Dinalungan in Aurora province, causing catastrophic damage.

The super typhoon has weakened now and lost intensity on two counts. The sea surface temperature has cooled relatively over the South China Sea, near the coastline of Taiwan and Southeast China. Also, the proximity of land has increased friction and vertical wind shear. It will further lose intensity as it nears the coastline. It is expected to make landfall in the evening near the southwesterly port city of Kaohsiung.

The cloud center and the wind center of the storm have a mismatch. The core cluster of clouds will move across the Formosa Strait, while the storm will track across the southernmost landmass of Taiwan. On a recurving track, the storm will enter the Sea of Japan in the next 24–36 hours and weaken further. This is the second super typhoon in the Western Pacific Sea after Kalmaegi, moving in quick succession. There is no more invest area over that region. No storm is likely, at least for the next 10 days. The peak season is also coming to an end, and storms become very rare in December.
