The cold wave conditions have seized most central parts of the country, with Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh being more prominent. The winter chill has extended to the contiguous parts of the bordering states as well. Location-specific cold wave conditions cover Kanpur (UP) – 8.0°C, Pulbani (Odisha) – 8.2°C, Sikar (Rajasthan) – 6.0°C, Jalgaon (Maharashtra) – 9.5°C, and a few more stations. However, the extreme winter freeze has traveled far and wide over the central states of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. These conditions will continue aggressively till this weekend and may ease out gradually thereafter.

Both West and East Madhya Pradesh have been swept with equal vigour by the cold wave, which is severe in some pockets. Similar is the case with Chhattisgarh, across the complete north–south stretch of the state. For record purposes, some of the locations in Madhya Pradesh include Indore – 8.2°C (–7°), Shivpuri – 8°C (–6°), Nowgong – 8°C (–7°), Jabalpur – 9.4°C (–6°), Rewa – 8.8°C (–6°), and Khandwa – 11°C (–5°). In neighbouring Chhattisgarh, the temperatures include Raipur – 13°C (–4.5°), Durg – 10°C (–7°), Ambikapur – 7°C (–6.4°), Pendra – 10°C (–4.2°), and Rajnandgaon – 8.5°C (–9°). The spread of cold is clearly visible and spans across most parts of these two states.

Freezing winds from the slopes of the northern mountains are blowing across the plains. These winds are also rolling over the Vindhya Range to reach the interiors of Madhya Pradesh. The cold stream is getting squeezed between the Vindhya and Satpura ranges of the state. Further, the bitter chill is traversing to the Chhattisgarh plateau, which is bounded by highlands and ranges such as the Maikal Range to the west and the Chota Nagpur Plateau to the north.

In the days ahead, during next week, a couple of weather disturbances are likely to move across the central and southern parts of the Bay of Bengal. Winds from the ocean, with warm and moist characteristics, are expected to spill over across the East Coast to Odisha, Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and East Maharashtra. Temperatures are likely to rise. Cold wave conditions will abate from Chhattisgarh and East Madhya Pradesh. Parts of West Madhya Pradesh may still continue with the cold sweep, albeit with lesser intensity.
