Key Takeaways

  • Pune and Nashik dropped to single-digit minimums for the second time this season, recording their lowest temperatures so far.
  • Cold winds spilling over from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh are driving the temperature dip in North Madhya Maharashtra.
  • Both cities are likely to record even lower minimums over the next 2–3 days, with chances of a brief cold wave.
  • A western disturbance approaching mid-December will displace the anticyclone, leading to rising temperatures afterward.

Pune and Nashik recorded a sudden dip in night temperatures during the last 24 hours. The mercury plunged to single digits for the second time this season. Pune dropped to 8.9°C at Shivajinagar and 8.4°C at Pashan. Both are about 3.5–4°C below normal and are the lowest of the season so far. Nashik also had a further drop of 1°C, plunging to 9.3°C, about 3.3°C below normal. The city had earlier recorded a low of 9.2°C on 18th November 2025, slipping into the first cold wave of the season. Pune had also recorded the second-lowest of 9.4°C on the same day before recovering to double digits later.

Both cities are located on the lee side of the Western Ghats and receive spillover chill from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Temperatures are expected to drop further over the next 2–3 days before recovering to double digits. During the next two days, both cities will record the lowest minimum temperatures of this season so far. There is a fair chance of a short spell of cold wave for Pune and Nashik.

Courtesy of the anticyclone over Central and North Rajasthan, the cold sweep from the north is finding its way into parts of Southwest Madhya Pradesh and North Madhya Maharashtra. Pune and Nashik invariably observe their lowest temperatures of the season between 10th December and 31st January, and quite often drop to single digits during this period. A western disturbance is likely to approach the Western Himalayas between 12th and 14th December 2025. The seasonal anticyclone, now fanning cold winds over North Madhya Maharashtra, will get displaced. The cold sweep for the region will be arrested, and temperatures will once again rise to double digits.
