The Southwest Monsoon has performed very poorly so far for the tech city of Bengaluru. The monsoon onset was much earlier than normal, in May 2025 itself, but the rains went missing. Even the onset phase was meek and mild, with only light and scattered showers in the last week of May 2025. Now, the capital city has recorded just 2 mm of rainfall in the last ten days. The dry spell is likely to continue, and minimal rains are expected until mid-July.

Bengaluru has a modest normal of 106.5 mm of rainfall in June and 112.9 mm in July. The month of June also performed poorly and registered a disappointing total of 23.7 mm of rainfall. This was one of the lowest monthly totals since June 2012, when the city had recorded just 7.2 mm.

Last year, the city registered 204.1 mm, nearly double the normal monthly rainfall. This year, both the subdivisions, Bengaluru Urban and Bengaluru Rural, have a shortfall of more than 50% between 01st June and 03rd July 2025. With the likelihood of scanty rainfall over the next two weeks, the rain deficit is expected to grow further.

There is no fresh surge likely to accentuate rainfall activity. Sky conditions will remain cloudy, but rainfall will be minimal. The plateau position of the city, with a moderate elevation of 3,000 feet, may cause patchy and fleeting short-duration rainfall due to orographic push. The Arabian Sea is mostly quiet, and the monsoon stream remains subdued along the coastlines of Kerala and Karnataka. No rainfall is likely, even in the catchment areas. Prolonged dry conditions may spell water problems for the metropolitan city in the days ahead.
