Mumbai witnessed a deluge during the first eight days of July. The city recorded more than 100 mm of rainfall on three occasions and over 200 mm twice during that period. The Santacruz airport observatory has already received about 1,272 mm of rainfall, far exceeding its monthly normal of 919.9 mm.
Although rainfall remained subdued for nearly a week between July 10 and July 17, sporadic but heavy showers have once again lashed the coastal city. Santacruz recorded 88 mm of rainfall during the past 24 hours, and showers continued during the morning hours as well. More spells of rain are expected through the day, with intermittent breaks.
The remnant cyclonic circulation associated with the earlier low-pressure area is currently positioned over Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and East Madhya Pradesh. This system is expected to move westward gradually, traversing Central Madhya Pradesh and the adjoining parts of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra between July 20 and July 24. Such a synoptic setup is favourable for strengthening the westerly flow along the Konkan Coast.
The circulation is likely to shift further towards Southwest Uttar Pradesh and the lower parts of Uttarakhand around July 25 before weakening along the Himalayan foothills.
Moderate rain and thundershowers are expected over Mumbai and its suburbs during the next four days. The intensity and spatial coverage are not likely to be severe enough to disrupt normal services. Most rainfall activity is expected during the late evening, night and early morning hours.
However, prolonged spells of rain may still result in waterlogging in some low-lying areas. Day temperatures are expected to remain pleasant, with the maximum staying below 30°C and the minimum hovering around the mid-20s. Light rainfall, accompanied by a few moderate showers, is expected to continue through the weekend and extend into the following week.
