Key Takeaways:

  • Pre-monsoon rain activities are expected to begin over Gujarat from May 30 onward.
  • East and Central Gujarat may witness moderate to heavy rainfall between May 31 and June 2.
  • Gujarat has escaped severe heat wave conditions this May due to persistent southwesterly winds from the Arabian Sea.
  • Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Gandhinagar and adjoining districts are likely to receive significant rainfall and thunderstorms.

After a prolonged dry spell, weather conditions across Gujarat are finally expected to change, with pre-monsoon rain and thunderstorm activities likely to commence from May 30 onward. The upcoming weather system is expected to bring relief from the persistent warm and humid conditions prevailing over several parts of the state.

Interestingly, Gujarat has remained largely free from severe heat wave conditions throughout May 2026, which is unusual for the pre-monsoon season. Normally, Gujarat remains among the hottest regions in India during May due to intense hot and dry winds arriving from the Balochistan region and Rajasthan’s Thar Desert. These weather patterns often push temperatures well above normal across Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Vadodara, Rajkot and adjoining areas.

However, this year’s weather pattern has been significantly different. For the last several days, southwesterly winds originating from the Arabian Sea have continued to dominate over Gujarat. These moisture-laden winds have helped keep daytime temperatures under control and prevented the development of widespread heat wave conditions across the state.

Now, atmospheric conditions are becoming increasingly favourable for rain and thunderstorm activities over Gujarat and adjoining Rajasthan. A cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over Southeast Rajasthan, while a trough may extend up to South Gujarat. These systems will enhance moisture incursion from the Arabian Sea and trigger widespread pre-monsoon weather activities.

According to the latest Gujarat weather forecast, rain activities are likely to begin over East Gujarat and adjoining eastern Rajasthan around May 30. Thereafter, the spread and intensity of rainfall are expected to increase gradually by May 31.

Between May 31 and June 2, several districts of East and Central Gujarat may witness moderate to heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. Isolated pockets may also record very heavy rainfall during this period.

Districts likely to witness significant rainfall include Sabarkantha, Mehsana, Gandhinagar, Mahisagar, Kheda, Dohad, Panchmahal, Anand, Ahmedabad and Vadodara. These showers are expected to provide substantial relief from dry weather conditions and improve overall atmospheric comfort.

Saurashtra and Kutch may also witness isolated rain and thunderstorm activities during this period. However, rainfall intensity over these regions is likely to remain comparatively lower than East Gujarat.

The upcoming spell of pre-monsoon rain over Gujarat is expected to bring down temperatures further and create favourable atmospheric conditions ahead of the Southwest Monsoon 2026 season.
