Heat Wave Over North, West, Central Parts of India: Severe Heat In Some Areas
Key Takeaways:
- The week between 18th and 24th May may become the hottest spell of the season.
- Several states are likely to witness heat wave conditions with temperatures nearing or crossing 45°C.
- Weather systems over the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea are unlikely to bring relief to mainland India.
- The country may witness the driest pre-monsoon week with minimal thunderstorm activity.
The ongoing week between 18th and 24th May is likely to be the hottest period of this season. Many areas of the country will witness a simultaneous attack of heat wave conditions, wherein temperatures are likely to reach the 45°C mark. Northeast India and some pockets of the South Peninsula may escape the fury of the heat. On the other hand, a few parts will witness extreme heat, with mercury in excess of 45°C for at least a few days.
The weather systems which had earlier given good showers over many parts have now faded or moved away. The well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has safely moved away towards the Myanmar region and Arakan Coast, and the Indian region, by far, will be out of its reach. Another weather system may develop on the farther side of the Arabian Sea over its west-central parts close to the Somali Coast and move further away. This will also be inconsequential for any significant weather activity over the mainland. Rather, it will drain the moist stream away from the West Coast of India, minimizing pre-monsoonal hazards.
The western disturbance, as an upper air system, will keep the activity limited to the mid and higher reaches of the northern mountains. It will not be powerful enough to inflict changes over the plains of North India. Temperatures are likely to rise over these parts during the next 4-5 days. The absence of any pre-monsoon thunderstorm or dust storm will enable the accumulation of heat without any discharge or exit in the atmosphere.
Heat wave conditions are likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Telangana. Some parts of North Interior Karnataka, South Madhya Maharashtra, and Rayalaseema will also observe light-intensity heat wave conditions. Extreme heat is likely over the border areas of Rajasthan, pockets of Saurashtra and interiors of Gujarat, Vidarbha, Southeast Uttar Pradesh, and the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh. Absolutely limited weather activity in terms of rain and thundershowers is expected, and it may turn out to be the driest week of this pre-monsoon season for the country.
