Key Takeaways:

  • Delhi to shift from pleasant to hot and dry conditions this week
  • Day temperatures likely to cross 38°C and approach 40°C over weekend
  • Weak wind activity to increase heat stress
  • Low probability of heatwave despite rising temperatures

Delhi weather has more or less remained pleasant during the first half of April. Day temperatures stayed well below normal on most days, except on 2nd April 2026, when the maximum recorded was 36.8°C, the highest of this season so far. Temperatures are now inching towards normal and are likely to exceed it over the approaching weekend. The base station at Safdarjung recorded a high of 34.7°C each on Saturday and Sunday, both below normal by about 1.4°C. Minimum temperatures have also continued to remain below normal by about 3°–4°C. The upcoming weekend is likely to be hot and dry and may record the highest temperature of the season.

There is no active Western Disturbance likely to affect the plains of North India over the next week. The system expected around 15th–16th April will influence weather activity over the hills only. Also, the strong surface winds, which have been mitigating heat stress so far, are likely to slow down, more so from tomorrow onwards. Bright sunshine over the next three days will push day temperatures beyond 38°C during this period. Today, the mercury is expected to cross 35°C easily.

This year, the rise in mercury has been rather slow for the national capital. Last year, it breached 40°C between 7th and 9th April. In April 2022 and 2023, the mercury crossed the 40°C mark on 27th April and 15th April, respectively. This year, the 40°C mark may be reached over the weekend, between 17th and 19th April 2026. Historical records suggest that when temperatures cross 40°C during the second half of April, the monthly peak usually remains capped below 41°C. This indicates only a slim chance of any heatwave developing over Delhi/NCR this month.
