Chennai has mainly observed dry weather conditions for the last about one week. At the start of the month, there was a brief wet spell wherein moderate showers were witnessed across the city and suburbs. The respective observatories at Meenambakkam and Nungambakkam have recorded 37 mm and 10 mm of rainfall between 01st and 13th Nov 2025. November is the rainiest month for the city with an average of 373.6 mm of rainfall.
There is a cyclonic circulation in the lower levels over the extreme southern parts of the central Bay of Bengal, next to the equatorial region. The system is moving westward and is likely to reach south abeam Sri Lanka and the Comorin region in the next about 48 hours. It is a slow-moving system and therefore, wet conditions are likely to last for 4–5 days, albeit with varying intensity of rainfall over Tamil Nadu.
The northward extension of the trough along the coastline of Tamil Nadu will drag the rains over and around the capital city, Chennai. Light showers are likely to start with on 13th and 14th Nov. As the system comes closer, the intensity and spread of the weather will increase. Moderate showers are likely between 15th and 17th Nov, and more so in the second half of this duration. Short spells of heavy rain cannot be ruled out. The rains will ease out on 18th Nov. Though a little early to say, the break will be short and sweet, and another weather system is likely to march, following a similar track, activating the Northeast Monsoon over the island nation of Sri Lanka and the southernmost states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. An update on this system will be shared as and when the vital signs of its presence appear over the South Andaman Sea.
