Delhi Unlikely to Reach 40 Degree Mark Next Week: Dry Weather To Continue

Day and night temperatures have remained well below normal during this week for Delhi. Base observatory Safdarjung Observatory recorded a maximum of 30.8°C and a minimum of 16.3°C, both below normal by about 4°C. A gradual rise in temperature is likely over the next 6–7 days, reaching the high 30s. Dry weather will continue for Delhi and suburbs during this period.
Delhi has a pentad normal of about 36°C in mid-April and 38°C at the fag end of the month. Usually, there is a steep rise in maximum temperature in the second half of the month. Also, the day temperature invariably reaches the 40°C mark in April. In the last two decades, April 2012 was the only exception when the highest for the month was 38.7°C, and that too was recorded early in the month on 04 April. More often, the temperature breaches the 40°C mark in the last week of the month.

Weather activity associated with western disturbances will remain confined to the hills. However, the spillover effect will suppress any sharp rise in temperature in the plains, including Delhi. The incremental rise over the next 6–7 days will take temperatures closer to about 38°C around the weekend of 18th–19th April 2026. Another factor mitigating heat stress will be strong surface and low-level winds. As such, the probability of breaching 40°C is high during the last week. Almost half of these occasions fall between 25th and 30th April. A cloudless sky at night will favour radiational cooling, and thus, minimum temperatures will keep mornings pleasant and cool.
