Dust storm and thunderstorm struck Delhi region twice yesterday: once in the morning/forenoon hours and a repeat around midnight. The storm was accompanied by strong winds and sharp showers. Three flights, including an international one, got diverted to the neighbouring aerodrome as a precautionary measure.
Most weather stations of Delhi area registered light to moderate rainfall. Base station Safdarjung recorded 11 mm and Palam observatory registered 4 mm rainfall. Most other stations had single-digit rainfall except Ayanagar, which recorded 12.4 mm rainfall.
Earlier in the day, the temperature had dipped below normal to 38.7°C, breaking the spree of 40°C and above, for the last five days. All is not yet over and another wave of thunderstorm–dust storm is likely for Delhi area.
The western disturbance persists over the hilly region. The induced circulation lies over Rajasthan and Haryana. The east-west trough keeps proximity with Delhi.
As the pre-monsoon activity struck twice in the past 24 hours, much of the instability in the atmosphere has already been realized. Therefore, it will take time to build that stock again. Thunderstorm-dust storm with strong gusty winds is likely around midnight and the activity may go on till morning hours.
Rain will stop and clouds will thin down in the afternoon and evening hours. The build-up is likely again, late in the night tomorrow and the rain and thunderstorm activity will resume, lasting till morning hours on Sunday.
The weather conditions will be relatively better and pleasant. The temperature may get arrested at about 35°C (+/-1°) today. This could be the lowest maximum temperature, so far in this month.
The mercury will rise gradually and may breach 40°C mark around mid-week next. It will not be ‘all clear’ at the start of next week, as well. Conditions remain favourable for continuation of pre-monsoon weather during first half of next week.
