Key Takeaways:

  • Pre-monsoon rain and thunderstorm activity continued across many parts of India.
  • No heat wave conditions were observed anywhere in the country despite isolated 40°C readings.
  • Khammam in Telangana recorded the highest temperature at 43°C.
  • Dust storms, thunderstorms, rainfall, and strong winds are likely across North India this week.

Pre-Monsoon weather activity has lashed many parts of the country. The Northeast region and Southern Peninsula witnessed scattered to fairly widespread rain and thundershowers in the past 24 hours. The day temperatures have remained checked over large parts of the country. There were few pockets with temperatures in excess of 40°C, like Gujarat, Rajasthan, East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. Yet, there was no heat wave, as such, over the country and all these temperatures were below normal. The highest temperature over the country was 43°C, recorded at Khammam (Telangana). This was above normal by 2.8°C and, therefore, did not amount to any heat wave conditions.

Over the plains of North India, only isolated places recorded temperatures of 40°C or marginally above. Border areas of Rajasthan like Jaisalmer, Phalodi, Bikaner, and Ganganagar registered day temperatures between 40°-41°C and these were below normal. The plains of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh were restricted to the mid and high 30s. No heat wave conditions existed anywhere in the country.

A western disturbance over the northern mountains, along with its support circulation over Rajasthan, will keep the pre-monsoon activity live over the plains and hills of North India during this week. Dust storm and thunderstorm activity with rainfall and strong winds is expected to lash these parts. Since this activity is likely to occur in the later half of the day, the temperatures will manage to rise to the mid 30s. One or two places may breach 40°C but with very little probability. Heat wave conditions are likely to remain abated over the entire region for the next about 10 days or maybe longer.
