Key Takeaways:

  • Delhi records coolest April day since 2016 at 28.2°C
  • Temperatures to rise gradually from today onwards
  • 35°C likely over the weekend; 38°C expected next week
  • No immediate heatwave; rise moderated by winds and weak systems

Delhi smashes the previous record of a cool day of the last three years. The base station Safdarjung registered a day maximum temperature of 28.2°C, about 7°C below normal. This is the coolest April day since 2016. Earlier, the capital city had recorded a day high of 27.2°C on 23rd April 2016. The city had registered a high of 28.8°C on 07th Apr 2026. No further drop is likely, and the temperatures are likely to rise from today onwards.

As per pentad normal, Delhi has a day temperature of about 36°C around this time. It rises further to reach 38°C during the last week of the month. Today, the temperature is expected to reach about 32°C, still below normal. The mercury will cross 35°C over the coming weekend and rise further during early next week. The record observatory Safdarjung has so far reached the highest temperature of 36.8°C on 11th March and 02nd April. This may get equaled or even exceeded by mid-next week, around the Vaisakhi festival.

The western disturbance has vacated the plains of Punjab and Haryana. Clouding still persists over the mountains. Another western disturbance, as an upper air system, will arrive on 11th April. However, its influence will remain limited to the hills of North India. Yes, it may restrict any sharp rise in temperatures over the plains, including Delhi, for the next about four days. Yet, persistent dry weather and adequate sunshine will trigger the mercury to reach about 38°C during the third week of April.

Surface and low-level winds are likely to become stronger from tomorrow onwards. This will further mitigate the heat stress of rising temperatures, if any. There could be very few patches of high clouds over the Delhi region, without impacting weather conditions, for the next about four days. Delhi has a firm past record of breaching 40°C in April. A repeat of that can only happen in the last days of April this season.
