Key Takeaways:

  • Fresh spell of pre-monsoon activity expected across North India
  • Rain, thunderstorms, strong winds and lightning are likely between March 18–20
  • Hailstorm activity is possible due to a favourable temperature profile
  • Wet spell to prevent a sharp rise in temperatures across the region

Northern parts of the country will witness another spell of pre-monsoon activity across the region. Earlier, the maiden spell of this season impacted most parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and North Rajasthan between 15th and 17th March. A short break now, and the entire region will resume another round of fairly widespread activity. Similar cycles of weather activity are expected, off and on, in the remaining days of the month.

Under the influence of a western disturbance and its support circulation over Rajasthan, a big cloud cluster has already reached parts of West Rajasthan, Punjab and some parts of Haryana. The weather activity over these parts will start anytime soon and extend further to entire Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi and parts of Uttar Pradesh and North Madhya Pradesh. There is a well-defined upper air trough, positioned ideally in the rear of these two systems. Such a feature accentuates the power and also increases the spread of weather activity. Fairly widespread pre-monsoon activity is likely between 18th and 20th March.

The temperature profile in the vertical column supports plenty of cooling and, therefore, is favourable for triggering hailstorm activity at some places. Otherwise, most parts will witness rain and thundershowers, accompanied by strong winds and lightning strikes. The combination of strong winds and hailstorm becomes a deadly duo for the standing crops, if any. This wet spell will arrest any sharp rise in temperatures, as was witnessed during the first half of the month. Now onwards, the transition month of March will find conditions as usual, both during day and night. Days are expected to be cozily warm, and nights will be pleasantly cool. Exercise needs to be cautioned for safety from lightning storms and gusty winds for the next three days.
