Mercury Drop Likely In Delhi: Rainy Weekend Ahead
Key Takeaways:
- Delhi recorded 35.8°C at Safdarjung, about 7°C above normal, though temperatures have started dipping.
- Rain and thundershowers likely over Delhi/NCR on March 15, intensifying during the night.
- Western Disturbance, induced circulation, and multiple troughs will trigger the weather activity.
- Another round of rain and thunderstorms likely between March 18–20, with activity continuing into next weekend.
After observing an incremental rise in temperature for the last three days, the mercury has finally taken a dip in Delhi. Base station Safdarjung recorded a maximum of 35.8°C, a drop of 1°C from the previous day but still above normal by a huge 7°C. Contrarily, the minimum temperature has risen by about 2°C and is now over 5°C above normal. The maximum temperature is likely to drop further over the next 4–5 days. With expected rains on the weekend, it may reach close to 30°C on Sunday.
There is already a Western Disturbance moving across the northern mountains. It shall vacate the region today itself. However, close on its heels, another system is approaching tomorrow. This will have an induced circulation over parts of Rajasthan and Haryana. Additionally, an east-west trough will run from Ganganagar, Hisar, and Delhi and curve southward near the Agra–Jhansi axis. This trough will oscillate with the eastward shift of the systems and pass through Delhi on 15th March, Sunday. An upper-air trough in the higher levels, positioned favourably, will further enhance the weather activity.
The weather activity will start from North Rajasthan on 14th March, a little late in the day. A sheet of high clouds will precede, and the northern plains, including Delhi, will have a cloudy sky today and tomorrow. There is a feeble chance for Delhi to have light rainfall late in the night on 14th March. The intensity and spread of weather will increase the next morning, on 15th March. Delhi/NCR is likely to have rain and thundershowers starting a little late in the day and continuing till evening and night. The scale and spread will be more in the night between 10 p.m. on 15th and 2 a.m. on 16th March.
The wet spell announces the commencement of pre-monsoon weather activity for Delhi and its suburbs. Peals of thunder, flashes of lightning, swift and sharp showers, accompanied by gusty winds, are likely in the night on Sunday. The temperatures are likely to drop and turn pleasant, albeit briefly. A broad clearance is expected the next day, on 16th March. However, the break may not be very long, and another round of weather activity is likely between 18th and 20th March. Even the next weekend, between 21st and 23rd March, will remain under the shadow of pre-monsoon thunderstorm activity.
