Key Takeaways:

  • Mumbai has maintained near-normal February temperatures, except for brief spikes above 35°C.
  • Sea breeze timing is the key factor controlling daytime heat in the city.
  • Strengthening land winds next week may delay sea breeze onset and raise temperatures.
  • March’s seasonal progression could push Mumbai into a hotter and more sultry phase.

Mumbai recorded near-normal day and night temperatures yesterday. Otherwise also, the city has maintained an optimal temperature profile in the month of February. Except for a hat trick of 35°C between 04th and 06th Feb and another 35°C-plus on 15th Feb, the city clocked temperatures mostly in the low 30’s. Yes, on 21st Feb 2026, the capital city recorded the first 36°C of this season. Warm days are ahead for the Konkan Coast in general and Mumbai in particular.

The day temperature is largely controlled by the timing of the sea breeze for the city. Any time the sea breeze gets delayed beyond 1330 hours, one can expect temperatures in excess of 35°C around this time of the year. Yesterday, the sea breeze set in quite early and today it was even faster. The maximum temperature may get restricted between 30°–31°C today, about a degree lower than yesterday. However, a significant rise in temperatures may come up at the start of next week.

Courtesy, cyclonic circulation over the Northeast Arabian Sea, off South Gujarat and the Konkan Coast, the city is predominantly having winds streaming from the sea early in the day. An anticyclonic circulation is expected to come up over South Rajasthan and North Gujarat at the start of next week. This will strengthen the land winds along the Konkan Coast for longer durations. The onset of the sea breeze will be later than normal and beyond 1300 hours. The landmass, as such, is heating up over North & Central Gujarat, South Rajasthan and North Madhya Maharashtra. The changeover to land breeze may happen in the early night hours and go on during morning, forenoon and early afternoon hours. The month of March, on account of seasonal progression, is hotter than February by about 3°C, both during day and night. Under the combined influence, the capital city seems to be heading for sultry weather, topped by higher-than-normal temperatures during the next week.

FAQ

A delayed sea breeze allows land heating to dominate longer, pushing temperatures beyond 35°C.

An upcoming anticyclonic circulation over Rajasthan and Gujarat will strengthen land winds and delay cooling sea breezes.

Temperatures are likely to rise above normal and turn sultry, but conditions will depend on sea breeze timing.
