Lohegaon airport, Pune recorded a scorching maximum temperature of 42.7°C yesterday. This was 4.7°C above normal and amounted to heat wave conditions over the city and suburbs. Other observatories across Pune also recorded temperatures above 40°C. The Shivajinagar observatory registered 41.4°C, surpassing its earliest 2019 record of 41.3°C. The all-time highest temperature for Pune remains 43.3°C, recorded on April 30, 1897.

Pune has a normal average maximum temperature of 37.3°C during May. However, the city has been consistently exceeding this mark for the last five days. The city has also remained completely dry so far this month, against the normal monthly rainfall of 19.8 mm. The dry spell is likely to continue throughout this week.

Dry and hot winds are sweeping across Madhya Maharashtra. Northerly winds from South Rajasthan and Gujarat are penetrating deep into the lee side of the Western Ghats. Ahmednagar, Nasik, Sangli and Sholapur also recorded temperatures above 40°C. Jalgaon airport was the hottest in the region yesterday with a maximum of 44.5°C.

The prevailing trend is expected to continue for the rest of the week. Pune is likely to record a maximum temperature of around 42°C (±1°C) today as well. No immediate respite is likely, and dry as well as hot weather conditions are expected to persist till the end of this week. Light rainfall activity may commence early next week.
