The northeast monsoon season has officially ended on 31st December 2025. The weather activity, as such, had mellowed down much before the stipulated withdrawal of the winter monsoon. Yet, a freak depression had formed over the equatorial region and adjoining South Bay of Bengal. Travelling across the island nation Sri Lanka, the system was parked over the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Straits for some time over the southwest Bay of Bengal. The proximity of the depression and its subsequent leftovers resulted in fairly widespread rain and thundershowers over the South Peninsula. Mercifully, no harsh weather conditions were observed for a longer duration, both over Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu. The region is likely to get freed from the influence and return to normal shortly.

There were scattered rain and thundershowers over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, South Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, South Interior Karnataka and Coastal Karnataka. The spell was mostly light and spared the region from any inclement weather conditions. The hilly resorts of Ooty and Kodaikanal did receive unseasonal heavy showers, and the rains continued during the past 24 hours as well. The conditions are likely to improve.
The remnant of the depression had reduced to a cyclonic circulation, placed over the Gulf of Mannar, off the Tamil Nadu coast. The feature has now shifted to the Comorin region, in the equatorial belt. A trough is extending northward along the coastline of Tamil Nadu. Scattered light to moderate showers are likely today between Tondi–Tuticorin and Puducherry–Cuddalore. Light rains will reach interior parts like Trichy, Thanjavur, Madurai and border areas of Kerala, South Interior Karnataka and Rayalaseema. Tomorrow, the rains will ease out largely and become very light and scattered. Broad improvement is expected from 14th Jan 2026, the joyous festival of Pongal.
