Key Takeaways:

  • Mumbai has experienced one of its mildest winters in recent years
  • Lowest minimum temperature this season was 15.9°C on 19 January
  • Day temperatures largely remained above 30°C through the month
  • Weather patterns suggest no sharp cooling in the remaining days of January

Mumbai has remained very comfortable this winter season. The lowest minimum temperature so far was 15.9°C, recorded on 19th January 2026. This has been the highest minimum temperature since January 2015. Earlier, the city had recorded minimum temperatures below 12°C on two occasions—11.9°C in January 2017 and 11.4°C in January 2020. The city has crossed the 20°C mark on four occasions this month and recorded a minimum temperature of 22.6°C this morning, which is the highest so far this month. The minimum temperature was 5.5°C above normal.

The coastal city has witnessed an exceptionally mild winter this season. During the remaining days of the month, temperatures are expected to remain in the high teens. Daytime maximum temperatures have stayed above 30°C, except on four days this month. Over the last two days, the city has again breached the 30°C mark, recording a high of 31.4°C yesterday, which is around normal for this time of the year.

Of late, a series of western disturbances has been moving across the mountains of north India, with induced cyclonic circulations affecting the plains. The seasonal anticyclone remained displaced from Rajasthan for an extended period. As a result, wind flow in the lower levels has largely been warm and moist. Mumbai typically experiences the onset of sea breeze around 1100 hours every day, with a reversal to land breeze occurring only around midnight. Cold northerly winds blowing across the plains of south Rajasthan have remained absent. Similar wind patterns are likely to prevail during the remaining days of January. Minimum temperatures are unlikely to fall sharply, and the lowest minimum is expected to remain capped at 15.9°C, as recorded earlier on 19th January 2026.
