The border city of Amritsar in Punjab received the heaviest downpour of the season in just 24 hours, surpassing its normal rainfall for the entire month of July. The city recorded 185 mm of rainfall during the last 24 hours, exceeding the monthly normal of 181.6 mm.
This is the heaviest 24-hour rainfall recorded in Amritsar in at least the last two decades. The previous highest 24-hour rainfall was 152.9 mm, recorded on July 12, 2017.
Between July 1 and July 22, 2026, Amritsar has accumulated 307 mm of rainfall. This is already the second-highest rainfall recorded during this period, behind 363.8 mm received in July 2023. The all-time highest monthly rainfall for July remains 441.5 mm, recorded in July 1949.
More showers, including isolated heavy spells, are expected during the remaining days of the week.
Heavy rainfall on Tuesday brought the city to a standstill, inundating several areas, including roads leading to the Golden Temple. While the rain provided much-needed relief from humid and scorching weather conditions, it also submerged several low-lying localities after persistent rainfall from early morning until evening, with extremely heavy spells in between.
The rainfall has also come as a boon for the region's prized Basmati crop, which benefits from adequate monsoon moisture during this stage of the growing season.
Meteorologically, a Western Disturbance is moving across the northern mountains. The western end of the monsoon trough over the plains has shifted close to the Punjab foothills. As a result, Pathankot, Gurdaspur and Amritsar witnessed heavy rainfall simultaneously.
The trough is expected to remain close to the region for the next three days. Consequently, moderate to heavy showers are likely to continue over Amritsar and adjoining areas during this period. With more rainfall expected, the city's monthly total is likely to surpass the July 2023 mark and move closer to the all-time July record.
