Rainy Days Ahead For Bengaluru: Heavy Showers Likely
Key Takeaways:
- Bengaluru remained largely dry over the last week despite rising heat.
- Moderate to heavy pre-monsoon showers are likely between May 15 and 17.
- Wind discontinuity over South Peninsula will trigger thunderstorm activity across Karnataka.
- Heavy showers with gusty winds may affect some parts of Bengaluru during evening hours.
The capital city Bengaluru has remained mostly dry over the last one week. Light showers were witnessed during the previous weekend, but these brought little relief from the increasing heat over and around the city. Earlier, the tech city had received a deluge of 111 mm rainfall in 24 hours on the last day of April. During the first 13 days of May, the city observatory recorded 31 mm rainfall, while the HAL observatory registered just 8.2 mm against the monthly normal of 110.4 mm. Moderate to heavy showers are likely over the city and suburbs between May 15 and May 17, 2026. Light and fleeting showers are also likely tomorrow in some parts of the city.
The low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is becoming more marked and drifting away from the coastline. Peripheral winds associated with the system are pushing northeasterly winds along the coastline of South Andhra Pradesh. On the other side, northerly winds are sweeping across the coastal areas of Kerala and Coastal Karnataka. These two wind streams are creating a wind discontinuity in between, stretching across central parts of Karnataka, Rayalaseema and interior Tamil Nadu. The seasonal north-south trough is extending from Chhattisgarh through Vidarbha and Telangana, joining the wind discontinuity over the farther parts of South Peninsula.
As the Bay of Bengal system moves further away, the wind discontinuity and trough are likely to oscillate back and forth. Converging winds from both sides of the coastline will trigger vertical motion and lead to pre-monsoon showers over South Peninsula in general and South Interior Karnataka in particular, including Bengaluru. Most of the weather activity is expected during late afternoon and evening hours. Caution is advised as heavy showers accompanied by thunderclouds and gusty winds may occur in some areas. A broad clearance in weather activity is expected early next week.
